Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Arthur Smith know they have a challenge in building a championship squad in the short term.
The Falcons had one of the worst roster in 2021, and Atlanta is 26th in the NFL in available cap space. “Available” is a relative term though, because according to Spotrac, the Falcons are $7.3 million OVER the cap before adding any players or attempting to re-sign any of their own free agents like wide receiver Russell Gage, running back Cordarrelle Patterson or the NFL’s leading tackler Foye Oluokun.
Fontenot said at the NFL Combine this week that they’d like to rebuild the roster while improving on their 7-10 record. With a soon to be 37-year old quarterback, the NFL’s worst pass rush, two gaping holes on the offensive line, and a wide receiver corp. that has one total catch in their career, that sounds ambitious.
Nick Kendell and Scott Kennedy discussed the reality of the Falcons plight on Forging the Falcons including the ability for the Falcons to win in a chaotic NFC South, the trade options for Matt Ryan, and the dream draft for the Atlanta Falcons.
