Breakout Edge Rusher Named ‘Perfect Match’ for Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons found quality additions for their pass rush in free agency a year ago. Pro Football Focus’ Dalton Wasserman projected Atlanta to do the same if they target edge rusher Bryce Huff in NFL free agency.

Wasserman admitted that the Falcons’ entire plan in free agency is “heavily dependent” on what they want to do at quarterback. But he still picked Huff as the “perfect” free-agent match for the team.

Bryce Huff was a rotational player for the Jets, but he was an absolute weapon off the edge,” Wasserman wrote. “He finished tied for ninth in the NFL in pass-rush grade and trailed only Myles Garrett and Micah Parsons in pass-rush win rate. The Falcons could offer Huff the chance to play close to full time if they can afford him.”

Wasserman argued that Atlanta’s need at edge rusher isn’t far behind the team’s need at quarterback. According to PFF, the Falcons were 27th among 32 teams in its pass rushing grade.

Huff posted 10 sacks with just 480 defensive snaps last season. He also had 10 tackles for loss and 21 quarterback hits.

There’s two different ways one can view that production. The first way is that Huff is a candidate to build off of his breakout season if given even more opportunities. The Falcons are more than likely willing to give Huff that chance, as they are trying to replace edge rusher Bud Dupree this offseason.

Huff’s 2023 production, though, could also be seen as an outlier. In his first 37 NFL games, Huff had just 7.5 sacks with 7 tackles for loss and 22 quarterback hits.

Will he have the same production as the top edge rusher in Atlanta?

Whether Huff really is a “perfect match” for the Falcons could depend on his contract demands. Spotrac projected Huff’s value this offseason to be $36.8 million on a 4-year contract.

That’s a long contract. But the average annual salary of $9.2 million is an intriguing price for a double-digit sack candidate.

Huff played a career-high 480 defensive snaps in 2023. He has also contributed with at least 60 special teams snaps in all four of his NFL seasons.
