Falcons Add Competition for OT Kaleb McGary

The Atlanta Falcons continue to try and become Chicago ‘South’ with the addition of another former Chicago Bear to the team.

According to Mike Garafolo, the Falcons have signed former Seattle Seahawks 1st-round pick Germain Ifedi to a one-year contract.

“The Falcons are adding G/T Germain Ifedi on a one-year deal, source says,” wrote Garfolo on Twitter. “The former Seahawks first-rounder is headed to Atlanta after two seasons with the Bears.”

Ifedi has been a starter much of his six-year career, almost exclusively at right tackle. He can flex to guard in a pinch, but it appears he will be brought in to proved competition for embattled starter Kaleb McGary who is in the last year of his contract.

Ifedi gave up two sacks in 412 snaps last season and had a pass block grade of 70.7 according to Pro Football Focus. By comparison, McGary’s pass blocking grade was a paltry 50.6 and he gave up nine sacks in just over twice the snaps (986).

Former Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace joined the Falcons staff in February. The Falcons have already signed wide receiver Damiere Byrd and running back Damien Williams from the Bears this offseason.
