The Atlanta Falcons have drafted Jalen Mayfield with their third round pick in the NFL Draft. At 6’5 and 326 pounds, Mayfield played tackle at Michigan and should slot in at right tackle.
There was talk about Mayfield possibly going in the first round, so the Falcons getting him in the third was terrific value.
Mayfield struggled a bit at his pro day with a 5.31 forty and 4.91 shuttle, but he has a terrific body of work.
We spoke with Michigan expert Sam Webb of TheMichiganInsider.com about Mayfield and he raved about the offensive lineman. Video with Webb is below.
Webb says that Mayfield was a player that the Michigan staff had to tame a bit. “He played until the whistle stopped,” laughed Webb.
A nasty streak isn’t exactly a detraction when we’re talking about offensive linemen.
Mayfield excels in the run game and needs work on his pass protection. That sounds like a perfect rookie right tackle in Arthur Smith’s power running game.
The Falcons took uber talented tight end Kyle Pitts in the first round and filled a huge need with safety Richie Grant in the second round.
