Falcons Release Dates of Red Helmet Games

The red helmets are returning for the Atlanta Falcons. In fact, the team announced on July 20 that they team will wear them three times during the 2023 season.

The Falcons also released the dates of those three games — September 17, October 15 and November 26.

Atlanta fans will have the opportunity to get an up close look at the helmets. All three of those contests are home games at Mercedes Benz Stadium. The first will be during Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers.

During Week 6 on October 15, the Falcons will host the Washington Commanders. Finally, Atlanta will square off against its arch rival, the New Orleans Saints, on November 26 in Week 12.

Last season, the Falcons wore their red helmets once. That was in Week 6 against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Falcons wearing the red helmets more often and at home in 2023 is the good news. The bad news is none of those three games will be in primetime. So, Atlanta won’t have the chance to show off its alternate helmet, which has to be one of the more popular secondary helmets in the league, in front of the entire NFL.

Of course, the fact the Falcons aren’t wearing their red helmets in front of a national audience isn’t the team’s fault. Although it’s possible they are flexed into a primetime matchup, the Falcons don’t have any primetime games on the schedule this year.

Atlanta defeated San Francisco, 28-14, while wearing its red helmets last season. It was an impressive win that saw quarterback Marcus Mariota complete 13 of 14 passes for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also rushed for 50 yards and another score.

After the loss in Atlanta, San Francisco didn’t lose another road game until the NFC Championship.

Perhaps the red helmets can provide some magic for the Falcons again during the 2023 season.
