NFL.com Reveals Atlanta Falcons Pick in Post-Combine Mock Draft

There’s a new era beginning for the Atlanta Falcons with the hiring of Raheem Morris. Like his predecessor, Morris begins his tenure with a top-10 pick in the NFL Draft.

Arthur Smith’s decision to bypass the quarterback position in 2021, helped seal his fate after his third, and ultimately worst season as head coach. The decision to go all-in on Desmond Ridder backfired spectacularly.

The Falcons are in considerably better shape than when Smith took over. That’s one reason general manager Terry Fontenot is still in Atlanta, with more power, and Smith is gone.

But there are still big questions at quarterback. Early last week there was a lot of momentum towards the Falcons making a move for Justin Fields. By the end of the week, it was Kirk Cousins rumored to be moving his family to Atlanta.

The Falcons could have options in the NFL Draft like Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, but right now it appears the Falcons will be done at quarterback before the draft.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com seems to think so with his post-combine mock draft. He has the Falcons selecting edge rusher Jared Verse out of Florida State.

“Let’s go out on a limb and predict the Falcons make a trade with the Bears for QB Justin Fields or sign Kirk Cousins,” wrote Zierlein on NFL.com. “If that happens, Atlanta could turn its attention to the pass rush and land a game-ready powerhouse ready to attack the pocket and play the run.”

Verse had an excellent showing at the NFL Combine last week. At 6’4 and 254 pounds, he ran a 4.58 forty and posted a 35″ vertical, 10’7″ broad jump, 7.31 3-cone, and 4.44 shuttle.

Before the combine, Mel Kiper had the Falcons going edge as well. Kiper took Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner at No. 8. If people liked Turner before the combine, they loved him afterwards. Turner measured 6’3 and 247 pounds with a 4.46 forty, incredible 40.5″ vertical jump, and 10’7″ broad jump.

What the Falcons do at No. 8 should have clarity before the draft. If they get their quarterback in March, edge rusher or wide receiver become the likely picks in the NFL Draft. The Falcons would also be an excellent trade-down candidate.

The Denver Broncos are desperate for a quarterback, and the Falcons could fetch as high as a 2025 first-round pick to move back to No. 12.

Picking up extra picks AND getting Dallas Turner or Jared Verse?

THAT’S how you kick off the Raheem Morris regime with the Atlanta Falcons.

  1. The Falcons also interviewed Drake Maye at the Combine…what is your take on that? A simple interest or possibility?

    1. Due diligence for sure. I just think trading up to get Maye will be prohibitively expensive. The Falcons would love to have him. I just don’t know of the opportunity will be there. Appreciate the comment!
