The Atlanta Falcons selected running back Bijan Robinson with the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday night.
The sweet spot in this draft appears to be picks 25-50 and the Falcons should have several excellent prospects to fill positions of need available when they’re picking.
Atlanta would like to come out of this draft with a guard, a cornerback, and a wide receiver among other things, and with picks No. 44 and No. 75 they should be able to fill two of those needs.
On Wednesday’s Falcons Podcast, we used the Pro Football Focus NFL Draft Simulator to help determine possible options at No. 44 and No. 75.
As we ran the simulator, coveted players such as cornerback Joey Porter Jr., guard O’Cyrus Torrence, and defensive lineman Adetomiwa Adebawore were off the board.
But there were several excellent prospects including offensive linemen Steve Avila and Matthew Bergeron as well as cornerback Julius Brents, and tight end Luke Musgrave.
We settled on Bergeron after a convincing argument from Falcons Podcast host Nick Kendell (in the video above). Bergeron has been mocked in the first round and has guard/tackle flexibility with excellent mobility.
He would be a likely starter at left guard right away with the ability to slide outside to tackle.
The third round appears to be now or never at the wide receiver position according to the PFF simulator. There is a stark-drop off after the Falcons pick at No. 75 in the third round.
Center Luke Wypler from Ohio State and cornerback Darius Rush we available and excellent players, but we went with Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims. He’s a smaller, speedy receiver who brings a skillset to the Falcons that they lack in the slot.
He ran a 4.38 forty-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He not only represents good value at No. 75, the Atlanta Falcons will be hard pressed to get a similar talent at wide receiver after the third-round.
To see more of the options and much greater detail check out the Falcons Podcast from Friday morning.
