The Atlanta Falcons have come to terms with one of their own according to Tom Pelissero. Younghoe Koo has signed a five-year deal worth $24.2 million Pelissero reported on Twitter.
“The Falcons are re-signing kicker Younghoe Koo to a five-year, $24.25 million contract extension with $11.5 million guaranteed, source said,” wrote Pelissero on Twitter. “Koo would’ve been a restricted free agent. Instead, Atlanta locks up one of the NFL’s most accurate kickers.”
Koo has made 87 of his last 94 field goal attempts, and he was a Pro Bowl selection in 2020. He’s a remarkable 13 of 14 from 50 yards and beyond.
The Falcons were 7-2 in one-score games in 2021 in large part because of the reliability of Koo.
With $11.5 million guaranteed, in essence, this could be construed as a three-year deal with voidable years in years four and five. The guaranteed money would be spread across all five years leaving a dead cap hit of roughly $4 million in year four and $2 million in year five.
Koo is a popular Falcon and one considered home grown after playing his college football at Georgia Southern.
After a slow Monday, the Falcons have been busy on Tuesday, the second day of the free agency period. The Falcons took steps to lock up free agent receiver Olamide Zaccheaus and have been reported as a sleeper team for quarterback Deshaun Watson.
